The Battle of St. Louis, also known as the Attack on St. Louis and the Battle of Fort San Carlos, was fought on May 26, 1780, between British-allied Indians and the Spanish defenders of St. Louis, Louisiana (present-day U.S. state of Missouri) late in the American Revolutionary War.
Native American Chief Pontiac is buried near here (30 feet east of Broadway and 60 feet south of Market) which was the old Fort San Carlos cemetery. In 1901, The Daughters of the American Revolution placed a marker in the lobby of the Southern Hotel. It was later moved to the Courthouse.
